Caution Many Silverlight and WPF architects are quick to jump to best practice patterns such as MVVM and the Prism framework without taking into consideration optimizations such as the one covered in this scenario. Implementing the MVVM pattern is not straightforward. Not only do you have to architect the solution properly, but your developers have to adhere to the MMVM patterns. For example, take a look at the commanding mechanisms employed in MVVM to facilitate the communication of the View (the V in MVVM) with the ViewModel (the VM in MVVM). This works well for synchronous patterns; however, asynchronous patterns are much more complex. You would have to create an asynchronous commanding pattern. This is where I find myself at a fork in the road when architecting Silverlight applications. Ask yourself how much plumbing code you ll have to write in order to fit into the best-practice mold and whether this will prohibit you from adding concurrency optimizations. Remember that with almost all design patterns, you will write more code. The ROI on the investment of MVVM has to outweigh the time it takes to write the increased amount of code plus the time it takes to test it.

The GEOMETRY datatype is a system .NET common language runtime (CLR) datatype in SQL Server. This type represents data in a two-dimensional Euclidean coordinate system. For those of us who might not remember grade school math, two-dimensional Euclidean coordinates are also known as plane geometry. Plane geometry addresses things like points, lines, circles, polygons, and any shape that can live on a two-dimensional x-y plane. Internally, spatial data is stored as binary within SQL Server. When extracting an ASCII text representation of spatial data, SQL uses the well-known text (WKT) representation defined by the OGC in Section 3.2.5 of the Simple Features Specification for SQL (http://portal.opengeospatial.org/ files/ artifact_id=829).
