In this way you can avoid a JOIN between two tables and achieve a little performance boost as a bonus. Another option to consider is to remove secondary tables by merging them into the primary table. This avoids a JOIN between the primary table and secondary table when an entity is loaded. Dividing a table into multiple tables In ActionBazaar, a Seller may provide some additional information, such as original purchase date, manufacturing date, warranty information, picture, or video files for an Item. When we originally modeled ActionBazaar, the Item entity had attributes for all these fields, and all the fields were stored in a single table as shown here:

A content-type listing is a simple list of nodes belonging to a single content type (see Figure D-1). In this example, a content type called Events has been created with a number of fields, including an event title, event description, event type (provided by a core taxonomy module), and event date (provided by the Date module). A second content type called Sponsor has been created with several fields, including the sponsor name, homepage link (provided by the Link module), logo, and sponsor description. In this setup, one or more sponsors are associated with a single event. When creating an event, site admins can select a node reference field (provided by the CCK module) to associate an unlimited number of sponsors with an event, assuming sponsor nodes have already been created. The site requires a mini-calendar block view, a full-page calendar view of all job listings, a block listing the next two events, and a full-page view of each event. Full-page views and block views should display event information plus sponsorship information. Note that this view works pretty nicely with the sign-up module, which allows users to sign in for a node; refer to http://drupal.org/node/808310 for updates on a Drupal 7 port.

Most of this information is not frequently used, so we marked these fields to be lazily loaded. However, what we did not realize is that lazy loading of BLOB fields is not mandatory for EJB 3 persistence providers. In our case, the itemPicture was retrieved when we tried to retrieve an Item instance, and performance was poor. We were able to improve things by dividing ITEMS into two tables: ITEMS and ITEM_DETAILS. Both ITEMS and ITEM_DETAILS share the same primary key, and we

remodeled our Item entity to carve out two entities: Item and ItemDetails. We then established a one-to-one relationship between these entities and set the load type for relationship to be LAZY as follows:

Now that we have some visuals to print, we can press Control+Shift+B to build the application and then switch over to Visual Studio 2010 to add the code that will allow us to print our main LayoutRoot Grid (which contains the image we just added). In Visual Studio 2010, right under the InitializeComponent(); call, we are going to raise and handle a MouseLeftButtonDown event on this, the entire application. To do that:

Starting under Style settings, you ll notice I set the style to Table; a number of styles are available, including ordered lists, unordered lists, grid view, and more, to style your list page as required. Selecting the gear icon next to the table style allows me to configure the table to sort rows if a user clicks a table header item. Note: Items with italic text are shared across all subviews, while regular text is specific to a subview.
